A Transitivity Analysis of Prefaces Written for Modernist Novel (Re)Translations: Understanding Paratexts as a Tool of Recontextualization

چکیده

This study focuses on paratexts as recontextualization tools, specifically prefaces written for (re)translations, and problematizes Turkish (re)translations of modernist novels in English, which, reasons morality, encountered legal difficulties, were stigmatized, banned, or confiscated the source culture. Recontextualization resonates with (re)producing ideologies, exposing various agents' deliberate power positions determining discourse structures within more general framework Critical Discourse Analysis. Against this backdrop, study, which is part a larger project, has twofold purpose: a) to evaluate 15 extracted from 10 tool recontextualization; b) investigate preface regarding transfer into target culture through lens transitivity analysis, based Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) model.
